Oller del Mas: A Romantic Vineyard Escape in Catalonia, Spain

An aerial drone shot overlooks the Oller del Mas estate, including the 10th century castle and vineyards

Ever wondered what it’s like to wake up in a sun-drenched cabin in the middle of a vineyard forest? About 45 minutes outside of Barcelona, tucked into the rolling hills of Catalonia, you’ll find Oller del Mas, a 10th-century castle surrounded by 600 hectares (1,483 acres) of vineyards, woodland paths, horse stables, and mountain views. This historic estate has been thoughtfully updated and restored with modern comforts, making it the perfect romantic vineyard retreat in Spain.

Instead of sleeping inside the castle walls, you stay in one of 22 forest cabins, where mornings begin with soft light streaming through the trees and evenings end with glasses of local wine in hand. It’s the kind of place that feels made for slowing down, reconnecting, and in our case, planning your next visit before you’ve left.

Stay: Cozy Cabins in the Vineyard Forest

At Oller del Mas, the magic is in the contrast. You’ve got a medieval castle at the heart of the property, but your home base is one of 22 sleek, sustainable cabins tucked into the surrounding woods. Each one is designed to feel private and cozy. You’ll find big windows overlooking the forest or vineyards, warm wood interiors, and just enough modern comfort to make you question leaving the cabin at all.

The perfect morning? Waking up to birdsong and soft light pouring in through the trees, then wandering out for a slow breakfast before heading to the pool, the wellness center, or a bike ride around the property. In the evenings, you can share a bottle of wine from the vineyard on your private terrace, or walk up to the restaurant for a proper meal. It’s equal parts nature retreat and boutique getaway.

Tip: If you’re thinking about booking, I have a code for you: use GIRLOLLER for 15% off standard cabin rates. I’d recommend staying at least 2 nights to enjoy the vineyard + wellness + a Montserrat day trip (more on that below!)

Eat & Drink: Bages 964

One of the biggest perks of staying at Oller del Mas is that you don’t need to go far for a great meal. Their onsite restaurant, Bages 964, quickly became the center of our days -breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all spent here, with menus that highlight seasonal, local ingredients and, of course, the estate’s own wines. Whether you’re sitting outside on the terrace or inside their elegantly decorated space, you’ll enjoy incredible views of Montserrat (see the photo above!).

The food is worth lingering over: think fresh flavors, beautifully plated dishes, and wine pairings that make you want to take home a case. In fact, this is where I should probably advise you to bring a checked bag because our carry-ons prevented us from doing just that!

*Just a small note - if you’re in a rush, this isn’t a quick-stop kind of spot. It’s a place to settle in, sip wine, and soak up the long, unhurried pace that defines the estate.

At Oller del Mas, wine is at the heart of the experience. Even if you don’t book a formal tasting, you can explore the cellars where the wines are made, peek into the elegant tasting rooms, and take in sweeping views of Montserrat that make a glass of red or white taste even better.

💡 Insider tip: Even if you’re not staying overnight, it’s worth visiting just for a slow lunch and a glass of wine with a view. Eat a pork bun and a croquette for me - they’re to die for.

Wellness & Recreation on the Estate

One of my favorite parts of staying at Oller del Mas was how easy it was to just be on the property. We spent hours walking aimlessly along woodland paths and vineyard rows, stopping to say hello to the horses or just soaking up the quiet. Bikes are also available, which made it fun (and practical) to get from one corner of the estate to another. Just ride carefully at night, especially back to the cabins from the restaurant. (My boyfriend will kill me for saying this - but he took a little tumble going down the hill too fast!)

For those who want to add a little more balance to the indulgence, the estate has a few other wellness perks. There’s a gym on-site, as well as a beautiful outdoor pool that’s perfect for a post-lunch dip. Oller del Mas also has a dedicated wellness center called Ánima -we didn’t book a treatment ourselves, but the space looked like a serene place to recharge and get pampered.

A Day Trip to Montserrat with Castlexperience

One of the highlights of our stay at Oller del Mas was a half-day trip to Montserrat with Castlexperience. Most travelers join their Montserrat tours directly from Barcelona, but since we were already staying at Oller del Mas, it made for the perfect starting point (only about 25-30 minutes away).

The journey itself is part of the experience. (Though be warned, the drive may not thrill those of you that get carsick easily.) Soon enough, you’re standing before Montserrat - Catalonia’s most mystical mountain. With its jagged peaks and deep cultural ties, it’s home to the famous Benedictine monastery and the Basilica where the Black Madonna is kept. Depending on timing, you might even catch the Boy’s Choir performing.

One of the most amusing things we learned? Montserrat is a popular pilgrimage site for Spaniards hoping to have children, thanks to the legend of the Virgin of Montserrat, or “La Moreneta,” who is said to grant fertility blessings. So much so that they built a hotel nearby to accommodate the influx of visitors.

If you’re booking the normal tour from Barcelona, it continues back at Oller del Mas, where you’ll wander the vineyards, enjoy a tapas spread made with local ingredients, and taste three of their award-winning wines. It’s a really great pairing - a day of spiritual and natural wonder followed by an afternoon of food, wine, and countryside views.

For us, it was extra special since we were staying in one of Oller del Mas’s forest cabins, but even if you’re just visiting Barcelona, this tour makes it easy to see both Montserrat and the estate in one unforgettable day.

💡 Insider tip: if you’re tempted to turn it into a full retreat, Oller del Mas has 22 modern forest cabins where you can stay overnight. And if you’d like to try it yourself, you can use my code GIRLOLLER for 15% off both cabin stays and the Castlexperience day trip when booking directly.

Montserrat, Tapas & Wine Tour

To Conclude:

Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend getaway, a restorative nature retreat, or a unique combination of culture, wine, and breathtaking landscapes, Oller del Mas has it all. Staying on the estate allowed us to experience the perfect balance of history, relaxation, and adventure - and I can’t recommend it enough. Don’t forget, you can use GIRLOLLER for 15% off both cabin stays and the Montserrat day trip, making it easier than ever to plan your own magical escape to Catalonia.
