The air of romanticism that we all associate with France is not just a stereotype. It is deeply rooted in truth. I’ve felt it in Paris, in the Normandy region, and most recently, in Marseille. The language, the food, the cafe culture, the music, and that flawless French style combine to create a unique atmosphere that feels a bit nostalgic and not of this time. Sleeping somewhere quintessentially French with a gorgeous balcony that looks out onto a sea of layered rooftops also adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the entire experience. If you’re looking for a memorable place to rent during a stay in Marseille, this Airbnb may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Location

The Airbnb is in a great location just a 5 minute walk from Marseille Saint-Charles train station in the 1st arrondissement. To get to the Old Port takes about 15 minutes on foot, or only two tram stops if you prefer public transportation. Be aware that the apartment is on the 4th floor of the building with NO elevator, so you want to be very sure that you have all of your belongings before you go out. That said, I promise it’s worth the exercise!

The Experience

It all started with a very warm welcome from hosts Melissa and Pat. After I checked in, they were kind enough to hang out and chat for a bit- offering recommendations (there’s a whole book full of fabulous ones!) and introducing me to my beloved French radio station. Melissa was even kind enough to invite me out for drinks one night, which I begrudgingly had to decline due to work. There are plenty of Airbnb hosts out there that treat their properties like hotels, but not Melissa and Pat. Their warmth and genuine kindness did not go unnoticed.

And so, for one week in Marseille, I felt like I was living in a beautiful French dream. I found myself in a stunning apartment with the aforementioned balcony and breathtaking views…made even more magical by high ceilings and enormous windows. I let old French music from the local radio station fill the rooms. I made sure I always had a good bottle of wine around, and I sat out on the narrow balcony often. I’d watch the world go by below, or marvel at the view (which, despite being nothing more than other roofs and chimneys, was my most photographed subject of the week).

I had everything I could possibly need. A washer, dishwasher, well-equipped kitchen, good WiFi, natural light, a designated work space, and a comfortable bed. I was pretty hard-pressed to leave at times, if I’m honest! As soon as I walked in the door I felt like I was home. I can’t explain it, but I felt like this apartment just suited me so well, and I felt happy and at ease there. I’m hoping the images below help illustrate my point- every room was charming and elegant and all in all it was a wonderful place to call home for a week.
